Americans take to road but cautious after gas shock

Reuters -- GRAPEVINE, Texas (Reuters) - Robert Neal will take to the road this Independence Day holiday the same as millions of other Americans. But there's a difference in their road-trip ritual this Fourth of July.

The price of gasoline, while down sharply from last year's peak, means the 74-year-old owner of a motor home may not venture as far as he has in the past.

Standing in shorts and sneakers outside his RV at a campground in Grapevine, a lakeside town near Dallas, Neal said he and his wife remained unsure where to go next. "The gas price as it is now, it's a maybe, maybe," he said.

Still driving to FL from NC. Travel will be tough on the wallet, although not as bad as last year $4.00/gal. Cut back on doing other things due to higher gas cost than in years past.

Staying put because of the economy; saving money. Hope and Change will increase taxes pretty soon to pay for all the spending.

Compared to last year, I'm seeing more boats on the Missouri River and slightly more traffic but most of that is less than 2 to 3 hours drive away from Council Bluffs and Shenandoah. For me its just the same commute.

I am staying put because I really can't afford gas for my truck. I do not have a full-time job at this time.

I'm staying home cant afford to do anything with the economy and jobs like it is.

Conservation is the best thing we can do. We still need to implement a fast track to alternative fuels and energy to be come energy independent from foreign support, big oil companies and local utilities monopoly.

With the current economic uncertainties, people are using common sense by reducing wasteful driving habits. I wish the same could be said of governments.

This article sounds fine until you realize that several things were not mentioned. Unemployment is at a 26 year high, many houses are still being foreclosed upon and the economy is horrible. Every situation is different.

You can't live by what you have been doing in the past but live now in the present with the problems we have and the bad economy. Because we have and RV doesn't mean we have to go on a road trip because we have in the past.

Low gas prices are in the days of the past. You will see less and less drivers on the road as gas prices go up.

Where is the cost of gas sharply down? Unless sharply is simply an extreme exaggeration to sell the story.

Gas jumped here by 10 cents and that was after the price of oil fell, I for one won't be traveling this hoiliday because I tend to conserve like most people but we still get a screwing.

A few dollars for gas and a trip to a nearby campground is what people need to stay sane in this day and age.

conserve fuel? don't take unneeded trips? help stop global warming? Wake up America government control is in all of your voices. this country was totally built on the people not politics. we are conserving fuel, use is down yet with a lowering of oil price gas here jumped 22 cents overnite. as far as trips as a kid i remember those unneeded rides in the country to see America. and global warming is a total farce. the earth is has been cooling over the last 5 years, don't trust me? good, research the FACTS completely. do it for yourself don't take someone else's word
