Time's report says that tinkering with self-driving vehicles goes back to the 1950s with General Motors' Firebird II, which was designed to be guided along the highways by an electrical wire embedded in the road.

THERE ARE SOME THAT PARK THEMSELVES NOW ... WHY NOT ... MIGHT KEEP THE NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS AT AN ALL TIME LOW, IF THEY GET THE SENSORS LOCKED-IN JUST RIGHT.

By the time we have self-driving cars, Time Magazine will have gone bankrupt. (It's getting thinner and less timely with every passing year.)

You already have some anonymous politicians deciding how your car should be driven...

That's the reason you don't use Microsoft Windows. There are operating systems that are MUCH more reliable. They're called "almost any other operating system." Even Microsoft Windows CE is a lot better than Microsoft Windows.

Where I used to work, they had an ATM that (believe it or not) ran on Microsoft Windows. It was very apparent once the software crashed.

The Navy actually buys ships where the contractor trying to run the ship on Microsoft Windows. You usually find out about those when some industry rag reports that the ship had to be towed in because the software crashed.

At least NASA has the sense to use Microsoft Windows only where software bugs can't kill the crew.

Oh boy, do I *NOT* trust some anonymous programmers to decide how my car should be driven... just think how often MicroSoft Windows crashes and needs to be rebooted... Don't want that kind of risk in my car... I want a stick shift, 67 mpg, simple car to get around in, NOT some creation that has piped in noises so I think the sound-proof cocoon is moving down the highway...

That's right. Take all responsibility away from the driver, then accidents can be blamed on the manufacturer. Then the lawyers will have a field-day sueing the manufacturers, who in turn have to cover there expenses with higher & higher prices.
