Ford Focus Electric puts energy consumption on the mind

The Gazette -- The Ford Focus Electric is the first all-electric vehicle from Ford in North America. It can be charged at any of the Electric Circuit stations, such as this one at the Pierrefonds-Roxboro AMT train station.

Ford is the one of a handful of automakers to join the electric vehicle market with the introduction of their 2012 Focus Electric five-door hatchback.

And unlike other EVs out there, which have gone funky or futuristic with their models, Ford kept things pretty simple.

A few styling tweaks to the Focus, including a unique front end and the Electric badges everywhere, are about the only major differences you can see.

Personally, I like this approach even if some of the other electric models out there do look good in their own right.

Pricing for the Focus Electric starts

Batteries are dropping in price and improving in capabilities..... so it may not be much longer before technologic almost eliminates range as an excuse. And for hybrids, there should be no excuse now.....(grin)

For instance, the battery brings an additional charge to EVs, but eliminates most of the engine and drivetrain maintenance. For instance, how many valve jobs will an EV need in a 10-year span????? (grin)

"at $42K, its twice the price of the gasoline version... Wish I could be more green, but can't afford it!!! "

That's the inflated Canadian price. I believe the EV sells for ~35k USD south of the border.

Ford Focus Electric puts energy consumption on the mind, EV's have very limited range, slow recharging time, limited recharging locations and can be very expensive.
If only the US automakers could learn from the Japanese and build vehicles that the public will buy in large quanities and makes them a profit with every sale. There's still a ways to go before EV's and Inbreds can hold their own and prove they are worth it.
My current vehicle was paid off many years ago and I don't need any new car payments now! I will drive my current vehicle into the ground before buying anything new, used, EV, Inbred, diesel, hydrogen, alternative fuel, CNG, concept and certainly not a Prius, Tesla, Leaf or Volt!
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

How do you feel about taxpayer subsidies for the Colorado Springs fire department, @GManCo? I'll bet you were glad they were around this summer.

@HYEgasCA, if I wanted America to fail, I would give huge taxbreaks to energy sectors that rake in massive profits while polluting our air, land, and water; all while making our people sicker.

The article said 4 hours to a full charge using 220V, @Aserdaten. 20 hours using 110V but those times are much longer than charging the battery from zero to 80% full. It's that last 20% which takes so long because the batteries need a trickle charge to top them off.

Saw my first EV charging station outside of Manhattan today. A local 7/11 in my neighborhood has two charging stations in their parking lot and I certainly do NOT live in an upscale part of town.

The range of this car seems a bit on the low side, but I have no idea how its competitors compare with that figure. The time to charge wasn't mentioned, unless I missed it somewhere.

Ford is going the extra mile to give the consumer something it can live with instead of something you are embarrassed to drive
