Heaven forbid a driver be inconvenienced by a few school bus stops. I have been driving since 1965. Somehow I manage to survive, despite having had school bus stops nearby since I moved here in 1977. 4 stops between my home and the main road, on one side, 3 on the other side, at least 6 routes using those stops, and yet, when I was working, I was rarely delayed by more than a few minutes.

rumble: not everyone has snow and ice. And in some areas there is no option to drive a different route (unless you can afford to add another 60 or 70 miles one way to the commute).
What I see is droves of kids from areas that are interconnected waiting every 500 yards (or 450 m). Those could easily be combined into one spot - and the parents are there anyways. Most of those could handle a good bit of walking themselves.

Do some people not realize the idea of MORE stops in rural areas has nothing to do with less exercise, and everything to do with safety. In the winter, when it is dark out in the morning, how far do you really want children to walk? Have you never heard of predators cruising looking for exposed children to pick up? Heck, we had one here right on the main road try to pick up a 12 year old girl not long ago. If you don't want to be inconvenienced by school buses, leave before the buses come, or after they are gone from your area, or drive a different route.

defiance: I agree. Make the kids go to one, more central spot. Esp. in rural areas where there are two lanes and the bus stops so quickly that it's impossible to pass for miles. Make the stops either more out of the way of the driving lanes, or create more central stops that picks up kids from a 1/2 or so mile radius. Exercise isn't a dirty word.

Chris46 asks: "What about when school buses speed? Or run a red light? huh? what then??"
What the heck does any of that have to do with drivers who are too stupid to stop for the safety of children getting on or off a school bus?

given how many ppl I see passing school buses, it would be good. But then, some bus drivers turn their lights on 100 feet before the stop and hit the red lights before they even come to a full halt and expect drivers to be able to stop for them on a 55 mph road.

Christiana1313 I'd like to suggest that your driver was at fault stopping in the such a way that a vehicle could pass on the exiting side of the bus. When I drove the rule was "stop at the side of the road so nothing can pass on the exiting side".

My concern is whether a driver has any recourse if the camera malfunctions and takes pictures while the bus is in motion.

Photos and Video of vehicles that do not stop for school buses, of buses that speed and of cops that speed and do illegal turns. The money fined for illegal vehicle operation can help fund schools and related operations. Keep the kids safe when getting on and off da' bus! Now if they can get the buses to make stops MORE than every two blocks and make those kids walk more and get the needed exercise. When crossing the street look both ways before proceeding, don't walk out without looking! There are too many near misses and some hits when people don't look before crossing a street! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

When a school bus is loading or unloading children, just stop. The safety of children is priority one.

Hard to stop when the bus is still moving in the other direction!! Even though it sound good, the real problem is the bus that stops at every house to pick up/drop off 1 kid at a time and spends 4-5 minutes at each stop and then turns the lights on as they are rolling to a stop so there is no way to pass the bus. They need to have a SCHOOL BUS STOP every 1/2 mile or so instead of at each house.

It has to pass parent/school board scrutiny so that kids aren't caught in the photos.

In many years of driving I have never seen anyone pass a stopped school bus with flashing lights. Perhaps it’s a problem in some areas.

Change the school bus routes to pick up kids like city buses, therefore no need for cameras.

I think all states should do this! It's SO dangerous when people don't stop. They should get a HUGE ticket & a few days in jail!

Let's hope the bus driver is being reasonable about their usage of the red lights and stop sign. I'm all for keeping kids safe but it takes cooperation by all parties involved to make this work and that includes the kids.

I have rarely seen someone illegally pass a school bus and I don't think there is any need for more surveillance cameras.

I'm all for it. I've seen too many cars ignoring the stop sign or blinking lights. Too many drivers in too big of a rush, putting kids in danger. Here in the central valley of California, it's my personal opinion many of those drivers who break the law are illegal residents who don't have a valid drivers license and consequently don't know the driving laws. The remaining law breakers are licensed drivers who also don't know the school bus laws or are in such a rush they ignore the laws.

It's about time. When I was 7, I was walking off the bus and a car did not stop on the exiting side. Just one more step and I would not be here. My mom and dad witnessed it. The bus driver yelled stop before I took that step. She saved me. Cops were called.
